How to Get Rid of Mold in the Toilet Bowl

Toilet bowls function as the perfect environment for mold growth. One of the reasons is their constant wetness, while the other is the naturally occurring presence of mold spores that settle on the surfaces of the toilet, including the bowl. When you don't flush the bowl very often, the mold spores will latch on to the bowl and grow. Fortunately, you can get rid of the mold and once again enjoy a clean toilet bowl. Instructions

  1. Eliminating the Mold

    • 1

Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Pour straight bleach through a funnel into a spray bottle or squeeze bottle.

    • 2

Spray or squeeze the bleach all over the inner surfaces of the toilet bowl -- especially those that display mold growth. Leave the bleach in the bowl overnight if possible. If not, leave it as long as you can.

    • 3

Scrub the inner bowl with a toilet brush to remove the mold.

    Keeping the Mold Away

    • 4

Pour 1/4 cup of sodium borate into the toilet. Allow it to remain in the toilet overnight -- or at least a few hours -- without flushing, if possible.

    • 5

Scrub the toilet with the the bowl brush before flushing the toilet to thoroughly clean all surfaces.

    • 6

Repeat the sodium borate cleaning treatment on a weekly basis to keep the mold growth at bay.

Tips & Warnings

  • NAS-12 is an odorless alternative to bleach.

  • Flush toilets several times per day to keep mold from growing inside the bowl.

  • Put a bleach tab in your toilet tank every 30 days to discourage mold growth.

  • Make sure the bathroom is well-ventilated when working with the bleach. The fumes can be overpowering.

  • Don't use a spray bottle or squeeze bottle that might have the residue of another cleaner inside of it. It could result in a dangerous chemical reaction.
