Most youth basketball jerseys use iron-on transfer paper to apply the names and numbers.

Making your own basketball jerseys can be done by using iron-on transfer paper to apply names, logos and numbers to the jersey material. Youth basketball teams often use the names of teams in the NBA. Unfortunately, the NBA has strict copyright laws protecting the logos of its teams. You may use the name of the team, such as the Raptors, but the logo must be slightly different. Using Photoshop or another image-designing software program will allow you to create a logo similar to the ones in the NBA.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a computer and Photoshop or another image-producing program to design a logo relative to your team name. Also, choose from a number of fonts to use for the names and numbers on the jersey. Use a printer to print the images onto iron-on transfer paper.

    • 2

Turn on the iron and preheat it to the hottest setting. Do not use the steam setting. Find flat surface that is heat resistant to lay down your jersey.

    • 3

Place the logo image in the spot where you wish to apply the design. Lay the paper image side down. Start with the top left corner and slowly run the iron across the transfer paper for 15 seconds. Place the iron at the lower left-hand corner and slowly run the iron across the transfer paper for another 15 seconds. Make sure all the corners of the transfer paper are flat against the fabric.

    • 4

Run the iron one last time across the entire image, using circular motions. Use your fingers to pull the pull tab and peel the backing paper off of the image. Repeat these steps to transfer the name and numbers onto the back of your jersey.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use the steam setting on your iron. The moisture will prevent the image from releasing from the paper.
