How to Clean Distressed Unfinished Wood Antique Furniture
Signs of wear or age on a piece of antique furniture may qualify the piece as distressed and increase its value. In its Conserve O Gram the National Parks Service states "wear and soil patterns can indicate historic uses and contribute to the unique value and character of the piece". The surface of an unfinished antique is unprotected and if you clean it your must do so carefully to avoid damaging it in such a way that and diminishes its worth. The Benson Ford Research Center says that only professionals should clean unfinished antiques. You will be safest simply removing loose dust and dirt. - Vacuum with hose and soft brush attachment
- Soft toothbrush
- Lambswool duster
- Mineral spirits
- Clean, dry cotton cloths
- Soft bristle brush

Removing loose dirt

Handle your antique by its sturdiest section to move it to the area where it will be cleaned. If you are planning to use mineral spirits, make sure the area is well ventilated. Move chairs by their seats. Lift the piece, do not drag it.

Vacuum the piece with a soft brush attachment.

Clean crevices with a soft toothbrush.

Buff with a lambswool duster. Do not use a feather duster as feathers can break and scratch the wood.

Inspect the piece to ascertain whether additional cleaning is necessary.
Cleaning with Mineral Spirits

Wear safety glasses or goggles. Pull on solvent-resistant gloves. If indoors, open windows to create cross ventilation.

Dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and rub a small inconspicuous or hidden area on your antique. Observe the impact on the treated surface.

Apply mineral spirits to soiled areas with a cotton cloth or a soft bristled brush and rub with a clean dry cloth. Allow several hours for surface to dry completely.
