How to Convert DSL to Wireless

By Quinten Plummer

Connecting a wireless router to your DSL modem converts your wired broadband signal into a wired and wireless signal. Devices without wireless capability can plug into the router for a wired connection, while wireless devices can connect wirelessly as long as they are in range of the router.

Place the wireless router in a well-ventilated area near your DSL modem. The router should have a couple of inches of space on both sides.

Plug an Ethernet cable into the port labeled "Internet" or "WAN" on the back of the wireless router. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into port labeled "Network" on the back of your DSL modem.

Plug the power adapter into the power port on the back of the router, then plug it into a power outlet. Turn on the router.

Connect an Ethernet cable between the router and your computer. Plug one end of the cable into the Ethernet port on your computer's network card. Plug the other end of the cable into the one of the numbered Ethernet ports on the back of the router.

Open the Internet browser on your computer. Type your router's standard Internet protocol address (192.1681.1) into the address bar of your router. Press the "Enter" key to launch your router's configuration menu.

Use your router's configuration menu to set security measures such as password and firewall protection.
