Viewing the 26.2-mile marathon can be as exciting as running it. There's a lot you can do to enhance your experience, and that of the participants you are watching.

  1. Step 1

Pace yourself. Just as a runner must, don't overdo it in the early going. Save some cheering for the back-of-the-pack runners, who need it most.

  2. Step 2

Yell the right things. Call out encouragement, even if runners look tired or discouraged.

  3. Step 3

Bring something to eat or drink. Some courses have ample water stations, but runners can use fruit and sports drinks as well.

  4. Step 4

Be careful with information. If you choose to give tips, make sure they are accurate. Say "third woman" or "3 miles to go," for example, only if you are sure the information is correct.

  5. Step 5

Bring out the family. Children especially enjoy cheering and giving out refreshments.

  6. Step 6

Get a number list. Some races publish a list of entrants. You can look up their numbers and call the runners by name, which really gives them a lift.

  7. Step 7

Get out your hose. If the weather is warm and the race passes your house, runners appreciate a cooling spray.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stand in the appropriate places. Avoid veering onto the course or ignoring the barricades. They are there for the safety of the runners.
  • Do not run with, or provide assistance. Technically, this can cause the runner to be disqualified. Also, organizers plan the event (i.e. room on the road, aid stations, etc.) based on those signed up, so you should not participate unless you are entered.
  • Help a needy runner. Bring bandage strips or petroleum jelly - items runners often require.
  • Bring out your radio. There is often coverage of the race and you can follow the progress of the top runners.
  • Do your homework. Study the elite pack so you will know who you are watching when the leaders go by.

on 11/22/2005 If you are cheering for someone in particular, buy helium balloons in a certain color and tell the runner what to look for. Bright helium balloons flying over your head make it easier for a runner to see you amongst the crowds along the sidelines.
