How to Configure a Dialer

The Windows operating system has a built-in dialer that can be configured using information you provide. The dialer is used to make voice calls using the microphone and speaker connected to the computer. The settings can be configured to automate and enhance the dialing process. To configure the dialer, you need to access the settings using the Windows Phone and Modem Options utility.

      Click "Start" and "Control Panel."

      Click "Hardware and Sound" and click "Phone and Modem Options." Type your area code and access codes into the pop-up dialog box.

      Click the "General" tab. Enter the general configuration information in the appropriate boxes. For example, click the check box next to "Tone" or "Pulse," depending on the dialing type available in your location, and enter a carrier code to make long distance phone calls if applicable. Click "Apply."

      Click the "Area Code Rules" tab if applicable. Use this tab if you need to create an area code rule to specify how the phone number should be dialed. Click "New," and the "New Area Code Rule" window opens. Enter the area code, and any prefixes or special access numbers in the appropriate boxes, and click "OK."

      Click the "Calling Card" tab. Use this tab if you want to set up a calling card number on the dialer. Click the check box next to the company that manufacturers your calling card in the list under "Card Types." Type the account number and PIN number in the appropriate boxes and click "Apply," and then "OK."
