How to Wash Down-Filled Pillows

Down pillows are filled with soft goose feathers, a traditional filling for pillows. Pillows need to be washed at least twice a year to remove body oils, saliva and mites. Synthetic pillows are durable and can be washed easily, but down pillows need to be treated more delicately. Wash them in the gentle cycle in your washing machine at home or at a laundromat. Front-loading machines are ideal, because they don't agitate as roughly as top-loading machines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the pillow for any holes or rips. Don't wash the pillow if you see any weak spots. The pillow could come apart in the wash, filling your machine with feathers.

    • 2

Put two pillows in the machine, and fill it with warm water. Wash two pillows at a time to balance the machine. Add a small amount of laundry soap. Use the minimum recommended for a small load.

    • 3

Wash the pillows on a delicate cycle. Rinse the pillows twice.

    • 4

Remove the pillows from the washing machine, and put them into the dryer. Add two clean tennis balls to help fluff the pillows as they dry.

    • 5

Dry the pillows on a delicate cycle. You will probably need to run them through two cycles to dry them completely. Make sure the pillows are thoroughly dry. Wet pillows will start to grow mildew.

    • 6

Fluff and shape the pillows by hand.
