Punching bags provide a good workout.

Working out on a punching bag can be an effective workout. Punching bags can be expensive, but you can make your own weighted punching bag with some sand and a few other materials and no sewing is involved.

Things You'll Need

  • Trash bag (heavy-duty and tall)
  • Duck tape
  • Batting
  • Rope
  • Sand

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a laundry bag three-quarters to the top with sand. Help settle the sand by tapping the bag on the floor as you fill it.

    • 2

Pull the draw string at the top of the laundry bag tight to close the opening of the bag, and tie it closed.

    • 3

Tape the opening of the laundry bag with two pieces of duct tape in the shape of an "X".

    • 4

Place the laundry sand bag inside a black trash bag. The easiest way to do this is to place the trash bag over the top of the laundry bag and flip the trash/sand bag on its head. Tape the trash bag with two pieces of duct tape.

    • 5

Wrap batting around the trash/sand bag to provide extra cushioning before you seal the punching bag in the next step. Measure the circumference of the punching bag and then cut a piece of batting that is the same measurement. Tape the batting in place with duct tape. Continue wrapping each piece of batting around the bag until the punching bag is covered. Trim away any excess batting at the top of the bag.

    • 6

Place the punching bag, now wrapped in batting, in another laundry bag but first remove the draw string from the laundry bag and re-thread with a piece of heavy rope. Leave enough rope to tie and use to hang from a hook later..

    • 7

Pull the rope to close the opening of the laundry bag, and secure the rope with a knot as close to the opening as possible.

    • 8

Wrap the entire laundry bag in duct tape starting at the bottom and carefully working your way around to the top. Secure the bottom and underneath the bag with additional duct tape to create a thicker skin.

    • 9

Hang the weighted punching bag from a hook and beam strong enough to hold its weight.
