Maternity pants fit a growing stomach.

A growing stomach during pregnancy needs a larger pair of trousers. Buying maternity trousers can be expensive and they can be difficult to find. Making maternity pants at home is easier to do from an existing pair of pants. Either turn a current pair of trousers into maternity pants or find inexpensive pants at a thrift store or retailer to wear during pregnancy. These maternity pants have a waist band that expands so you can wear them throughout your pregnancy.

  • Pants
  • Chalk
  • Scissors
  • Knit fabric
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

      Put on the pants. If you're making these while pregnant, the pants will should fit through your legs and thighs. Mark the place where they stop fitting with chalk. If you are not pregnant, mark the pants an inch above where your stomach begins.

      Cut the pants horizontally, following the chalk line in the front and directly below the belt loops in the back.

      Cut a strip in the knit fabric 12 inches high for pants that can be worn through out your pregnancy. Wrap the band around your stomach and cut about an inch from where the material overlaps.

      Pin the ends of the material together and then sew leaving an inch-long inseam.

      Pin the band in place over your jeans, leaving about a half-inch seam. Sew the band to the pants.
