How to Assemble a Mikuni Float Valve

The floats used in a Mikuni carburetor are made of plastic. Eventually, the float will saturate with gasoline and you will notice your motorcycle not getting enough gas or overflowing gas from the overflow tube. When this happens, you must replace the float assembly with a new one. Replacing the float is easy but you must calibrate the new assembly to ensure you have a balanced flow of gas in the carburetor.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the four screws that hold the float bowl on to the bottom of the carburetor with a screwdriver. Remove the float bowl and the float bowl gasket.

    • 2

Remove the aluminum screw that holds the float in the carburetor and discard the old float.

    • 3

Take the needle out of the needle seat and clean it off since you have the float out.

    • 4

Lay the Mikuni carburetor on its back and slide the float needle into the needle seat.

    • 5

Place the float into the carburetor and secure it with the single aluminum screw. Be careful, the screw head will strip easily.

    • 6

Flip the Mikuni carburetor upside down and place a precision ruler against the bowl seal surface and take a measurement of the float. The float has a line around the middle of it where the two sides of the float were joined together. The float should measure 1-inch on a 20 mm Mikuni or 7/8-inch for a 22.5 mm Mikuni.

    • 7

Push the metal tab on the float towards the needle if the measurement was too high. Push the tab away from the needle if the measurement was too low. Make minor changes to the metal tab and then recheck the measurement. Continue this until the float sits at the correct height with the carburetor upside down.

Place the seal back into the carburetor's base and then secure the float bowl onto the carburetor with the four screws and the screwdriver.
