How to File Income Tax in New Jersey

How to File Income Tax in New Jersey thumbnail
File your New Jersey income taxes online or through the mail.

Any resident, part-time resident and working nonresident of New Jersey must file a state income tax return if any income earned during the year exceeds state tax requirements. You have two filing options if you're filing in New Jersey -- filing electronically or filing by mail. The New Jersey Division of Taxation accepts returns in both forms, the only difference is the amount of time it takes to process your return. The state processes electronically filed returns more quickly than paper returns, meaning you'll receive your refund due several weeks sooner.

Instructions

File your return electronically by choosing one of the NJ Division of Taxation's online tax filing services and entering all of your income tax information from your tax forms for the tax year in question. Online tax preparation services assist you in filling out your tax forms one line at a time by asking specific questions and providing you with the information as to where to find the required information in your tax forms. Review your information and submit your return.
