How to Add an MX Resource Record

An MX record is a type of DNS entry that lets servers know where to route email messages. Email bounces from server to server until it lands in the intended destination domain; therefore, you create an MX record to route your domain email to the proper path. An MX record is created on your Windows server in the DNS configuration console. This is necessary if you host your own email server.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu button on your email server. Click "Administrative Tools," then click "DNS Configuration Server" to open your configuration server.

    • 2

Click the plus sign next to your DNS server name in the left panel. Click "Forward Lookup Zones" in the list of expanded options. Right-click your email domain and select "New Mail Exchanger (MX)." A new window opens.

    • 3

Click "Browse" next to the text box labeled "FQDN of the Mail Server." In the opened window, type the name of your email server. Click "Add Host" to close the opened window.

    • 4

Click "OK" to save the changes. Click "OK" again in the main properties window to close the window. Your MX record is created.
