Children develop motivation due to parents and teachers. They tend to have more motivation when people expect them to learn and do well. The climate of the classroom and school-wide procedures contribute to positive or negative learning. Children that are disadvantaged or have learning disorders have to work harder to develop motivation and to succeed in school. To motivate children in the classroom, create an environment that fosters success.

      Teach children time management skills and effective study habits. The essence of what you teach depends on the age of the children. Elementary school children will not receive the same instruction as high school students. Emphasize the importance of effective study habits. Advise the students that failure is often due to improper study habits.

      Assign achievable tasks to low-performing children. Don't lower the bar too far. Have high expectations along with reasonable work. If there are children in the classroom that you believe my be suffering from a learning or other disorder, facilitate testing or further investigation.

      Engage students in fun learning activities. Students in upper elementary school can engage in debates, for example. Choose topics for them to research and have them prepare questions and speeches. This motivates children to actively participate in learning.

      Set expectations high for students. The expectations must not be unrealistic. Be clear about your expectations and goals for students. Use those specific goals to ensure that they meet feel motivated. Expecting success and prompting students to achieve it makes children proud.
