How to Remodel a Bedroom With an Indian Theme

If you're looking to create a romantic, sensual and colorful bedroom, consider infusing the space with Indian-inspired decor. Vibrant colors, luxurious fabrics and ornate furnishings come together to create an exotic bedroom that will whisk you to another land.

Instructions

1. Paint your bedroom walls. Indian decor is known for its vibrant colors. Hues to consider include terracotta, curry, fuchsia, purple, orange and turquoise. To make the walls even more interesting, paint them a combination of colors. Choose one color for the walls and another for the trim, or use stencils to apply decorative scroll work in an accent color.

2. Add Indian-inspired furnishings. Use dark wood, such as teak, cherry, rosewood or cedar. Place an ornately carved wooden headboard above your bed. Or instead of a headboard, create a more romantic look with a canopy bed, and drape it with saris or decorative embroidered fabric. Make a seating area by placing large satin pillows around a wood coffee table painted with intricate designs.

3. Incorporate colorful window treatments and bedding. Use colorful saris as curtains. For bedding, choose satin or silk sheets and comforters that feature bold colors. Display a lot of decorative pillows on your bed. Use a sari or another piece of colorful fabric as a tapestry and hang it from the ceiling or on a wall.

4. Illuminate the room. Hang decorative wrought-iron sconces on the wall above your bed or a chandelier with brightly colored beads from the ceiling. Situate an ornate brass floor lamp next to a chair. Indian-inspired lanterns cast a soft glow, bringing a sense of romance and calm to the room.

5. Accessorize with traditional Indian pieces. Display statues of Buddha or Ganesh on a shelf or bedside table. Burn sticks of incense in decorative incense holders to create a sensory experience. Frame prints of ancient Indian artwork. Place silver accents, such as jewelry boxes and vases, around the room. Display a large mirror placed in a decorative frame over your dresser.
