How to Make Cloth Diapers With Jeans

Homemade denim diapers are an economical alternative to purchasing cloth diapers and an environmentally friendly alternative to disposable diapers. 1
Lay a piece of denim on a flat surface and place a cloth diaper on top to use as a template. Trace around the diaper and cut out the diaper from the denim. Repeat this step on another piece of denim.
-
2
Lay the denim diaper on top of a piece of cotton knit or flannel fabric, trace the diaper and cut out the shape from the cotton knit or flannel. This fabric will not be visible when the diaper is completed, so the color and pattern is not important.

3
Fold a washcloth or a washcloth-sized piece of microfiber into a third so that it forms a long, thin rectangle. Use a single stitch by hand or a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine to sew the folded washcloth or microfiber in the center of the cotton or flannel.
-
4
Place one of the denim fabrics on the flat surface with its good size facing upward and place the other denim diaper piece on top facing downwards. Place the cotton or flannel on top of the denim diapers and pin the three layers in place.
-
5
Sew three sides of the three layers together using a straight stitch. Leave open the end that would fit against the baby's stomach.
-
6
Use a straight stitch to sew a length of elastic onto the three seamed edges. Place the first elastic at the opposite end of the open end and stretch the elastic slightly as you sew. Place the other two pieces of elastic on the inner curves of the diaper. Stretch out the elastic as you sew.
-
7
Reach into the open end of the diaper and turn it right-side in. Fold the open ends of the diaper over so they form a smooth edge and sew the seam together using a straight stitch.
-
8
Using a denim material for the outer fabric of the diaper, and an alternative material, such as a flannel fabric, for the interior of the diaper will make a more comfortable diaper.
