How to Register Cattle Brands

Registered cattle brands are important because they establish proof of ownership. Brands also facilitate the return of stray animals to the rightful person. Identification of livestock with brands is not a new practice. Branding originated around 2700 B.C., as shown by paintings of branded oxen in Egyptian tombs. The practice of branding was brought to America by Cortez in 1541.

Instructions

1. Contact your state's department of agriculture; this the place to start your inquiries. If this department don't register brands, ask them to direct you to the correct agency.

2. Design at least three brands; this improve your chances of submitting one that has not been previously claimed. Brands must contain at least two characters, but they can contain three.

3. Note the selected branding location; provide sketches in the application. Signify any other identifying marks on your cattle, such as ear notches or tattoos.

4. Complete the application, and include any applicable fees. Notarization might be required. Submit the application to the appropriate agency.

Tips & Warnings

• Most states require that brands be re-registered after a period of time. Don't let your registration expire.
