How to Make Hypoallergenic Shampoo for Canines

How to Make Hypoallergenic Shampoo for Canines thumbnail
Keep your best friend comfortable by making a hypoallergenic dog shampoo.

If your dog has sensitive skin, it may spend much of its time scratching, which could lead to dandruff or a rash. Commercial pet shampoos, especially those that contain fragrances or dyes, can exacerbate skin problems. Store shampoos can also be needlessly expensive. Making your own dog shampoo allows you to adjust ingredients slightly to create the combination that works best for your dog. It also puts you in control of the dyes and perfumes that do -- or don't -- touch your dog's skin.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring cup
  • 2 cups clear, unscented liquid dish detergent
  • Bowl
  • 1/2 cup glycerine
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • Spoon
  • Bottle

Instructions

    • 1

Place the liquid dish detergent in a large mixing bowl.

    • 2

Add the glycerin, which can be found in most drug stores.

    • 3

Pour in the water and the apple cider vinegar.

    • 4

      Stir the ingredients thoroughly.

    • 5

Pour your dog shampoo into a glass or plastic bottle, and store it in a cool, dry place.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use water infused with skin-soothing herbs in the recipe. Herbs like tea tree, lavender, rosemary and mint can soothe skin irritation. Let the herbs, about a handful of each, soak in heated water for about 30 minutes. Strain the mixture so only the water goes into the bowl.
