How to Change the Library of Congress to the Dewey Decimal

The Library of Congress assigns books a Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN). This unique number identifies the individual book in the Library of Congress catalog records. This number is different from a book's Dewey Decimal number that is used by libraries for identification. There is no single resource that lists both the LCCN and the Dewey Decimal number for every book. You can, however, use several online tools to find both the LCCN and the Dewey Decimal number for most books.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a web browser on your computer and go to the Library of Congress Online Catalog. Search for the book for which you want to find Dewey Decimal information. Select the book from the list of books that matches your search query. Scroll down to find the book's Library of Congress Control Number (LCCN). Look for another field that says "Dewey Class No." This is the Dewey Decimal number for the book. Many books, however, will not have the Dewey Decimal number listed in The Library of Congress Online Catalog.
