How to Use the HeartWise Application for an iPhone
Having high blood pressure increases your risk of suffering a potentially fatal stroke or heart attack, so making lifestyle changes and monitoring your progress could be an important step. HeartWise is an application for the iPhone that allows you to keep track of your blood pressure, weight and resting heart rate so you can see the effects of medicines and taking recommended measures such as eating healthily, exercising and reducing your consumption of alcohol.
The application is not a tool for determining blood pressure and does not replace medical advice. If you have any worries about your blood pressure, it is best to discuss these with your doctor.
Instructions
-
Enter Measurements
-
1
Measure your blood pressure, pulse and weight. Use a home blood pressure monitor to take a reading of your blood pressure. The Blood Pressure Association recommends doing this at the same time everyday so that you get a like-for-like measurement. It also advises taking one reading in the morning and another in the evening every day.
To measure your heart rate, find your pulse on your wrist, count how many beats you feel in ten seconds, then multiply the answer by six.
-
2
Touch the HeartWise icon on your iPhone to open the application.
-
-
3
Touch the first sharp sign ("#") labelled "Systolic Pressure." Enter the first numbers of your blood pressure measurement here using the keypad that has appeared on your screen. For example, if your reading is 115/85, you would enter "115" here.
Do the same with the diastolic pressure reading. This is the second number of your measurement.
-
4
Touch the tab entitled "Pulse." Enter your heart rate using the same method employed to record blood pressure.
-
5
Touch the tab entitled "Weight." Enter your weight in the same way. The HeartWise application measures weight in pounds. If you normally use stones or kilograms, make sure you have converted your figures.
-
6
Touch "Done" and then "Record" to save your reading. The application will take a note of the time you entered the details and then send you to the "Quick Look" screen, where you can see the reading you have taken.
If you have made any mistakes entering your data, you can alter it now. To do so, touch the measurement details twice and use the form that appears to correct the figures.
You can leave out any step of measuring your blood pressure, pulse and weight if you only need to monitor one of these statistics. Simply press the tab you need to fill in then press "Done" and "Record."
-
7
Touch "Charts" from the options listed at the bottom of the screen. This takes you to a line graph showing how your blood pressure, pulse and weight has changed over the week, month, past 90 days or year. To see a larger version of the graphs, touch one and it will enlarge.
-
8
Touch "Statistics." HeartWise calculates your mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure from the figures you have entered. These numbers are shown on the Statistics screen.
