How to Remove Tailgate Panel Oxidation

Oxidation can occur on a tailgate from direct exposure to the harmful rays of sunlight and other natural elements in nature. Oxidation builds up on the surface of the paint, causing it to look dull and have a rough texture. If oxidation is removed correctly, the paint can be almost completely restored to look like new with a high gloss shine and a smooth surface. The oxidation can be removed from a tailgate in under an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a new or clean buffing pad on the buffer. Add 1/4 cup of liquid rubbing compound to the buffing pad.

    • 2

Place the buffing pad against the tailgate panel and turn the buffer on. Work the buffer in small circles and keep it moving left to right so it doesn't sit in one place longer than a few seconds, or the paint may be burned off.

    • 3

Work from the top of the tailgate down to the bottom. If there are any hard to reach places in the groves and contours of the tailgate, use a towel and your hand to apply the rubbing compound.

    • 4

Use a clean buffing pad to clean the compound off of the vehicle. This will bring out a glossy shine to the paint on the tailgate.
