How to Twist Pretzels

How to Twist Pretzels thumbnail
Twist your pretzels properly for the best-looking results.

Making your own pretzels can be a fun, fairly simple project that is similar to making a loaf of bread--at least in the early stages of the project. Of course, the two projects diverge dramatically at one point; after all, you cannot bake your pretzel dough in a loaf pan and come out with anything resembling a pretzel. Instead, you must roll out the pretzel dough and twist it into a pretzel shape before putting it into the oven. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Divide your pretzel dough into evenly sized pieces. The size of each piece, and the number of pieces per batch of dough, varies by recipe. If your recipe says it makes 18 pretzels, divide the dough into 18 equally sized pieces.

    • 2

Roll out one of the dough pieces by hand into a long, thin rope of dough. Make the rope as even as possible, without noticeably thin or thick areas. The width and length of the rope will directly impact the size and thickness of your finished pretzel, so roll it out accordingly.

    • 3

Bend the ends of the rope upward to form a U shape. Cross the two sides of the rope over each other about 2/3 of the way up each side. The dough should now form an X with the bottom two legs connecting to make a loop. Cross the two sides of the rope over each other again to turn the simple cross into a twist.

    • 4

Grip one of the ends of the rope in each of your hands, and bring them straight down to meet the rope of dough where it curves at the bottom. Place the ends of the rope onto the curved dough, then press them down to force them to stay in place. Repeat the process for each of your remaining pieces of pretzel dough.
