1
Take inventory of the tools that you currently own. Do you have any duplicates? Are any of the tools of little to no use to you at this point in time? Take any tools that fit these descriptions and store them in a cardboard box. While you may need them down the road, they will do nothing but clutter your tool box now.

2
Organize your tools in categories. Ideally, your homemade tool box will have built in dividers that allow you to keep certain types of tools separated from one another. Strive to keep all of your wrenches together in one section, screwdrivers in another etc. Remember to return your tools to their designated spaces once you take them out for use.

Store your tools in order of how often they get used. For example, if you find yourself using wrenches on a regular basis, they should be stored towards the front of the tool box for easy access. This is especially important if it is somewhat of a hassle to get to the tools in the back of your tool box.

4
Make adjustments to your organization as you learn what works and what does not. If you find that you would benefit from organizing your tools by job rather than by category, by all means do so. The goal is to make it so that your tool box is as efficient as possible.
