How to Carve a Shed
Whether you want to create a decorative design, numbers or lettering on your shed, you can accomplish the project through wood carving. The technique known as chip carving allows you to carve anything into the exterior wood on a shed to personalize it. Classic carvings for exteriors include scallop shells, pineapples and other Americana designs. For letters and numbers, you may choose to carve your last name or house number onto the shed. Carving your shed adds detail and beauty to the structure.

1
Using a pencil, draw a design onto the exterior of the shed in the spot you want it located. Use a flexible curve ruler to achieve a variety of flowing curved lines if they are required for the design you are drawing.
-
2
Cut along the outside lines of the design with a chip carving knife. Hold the knife with the blade angled inward slightly on both sides of the outside lines. This removes a V-shaped cut from the wood once you complete both sides of the outside lines. Continue in this manner until the entire design is carved out. Take small chips of wood at a time rather than making large deep cuts.

Sand the surface of the carving lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. This removes any stray pencil marks and cleans any edges of cuts that might not be completely crisp. Always sand with the grain.
