How to Hook a 4-Ohm Speaker to an 8-Ohm Stereo

How to Hook a 4-Ohm Speaker to an 8-Ohm Stereo thumbnail
Connecting 4-ohm speakers to an 8-ohm stereo raely presents an issue under normal circumstances.

Most home audio systems are designed to handle 6 to 8 ohm speaker impedances, nominally. However, impedance fluctuates based on frequency, meaning that extremely low bass or high treble can dip into the 2-ohm range or below for brief periods. Therefore, wiring a speaker that has a 4-ohm nominal load to an 8-ohm stereo rarely presents a problem under normal operating conditions.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker wire
  • 4-ohm speakers
  • 8-ohm stereo

Instructions

    • 1

Access the back of the stereo and speakers. Locate the binding post terminals on both.

    • 2

Rotate the binding post caps counterclockwise to expose the holes on the binding posts. Do this for both the 4-ohm speakers and the 8-ohm stereo.

    • 3

Insert the speaker wire into the holes on the stereo's binding post terminals. Rotate the binding post caps clockwise to tighten them and secure the speaker wire. Route the speaker wire to the 4-ohm speakers.

    • 4

Slide the speaker wires into the binding posts on the 4-ohm speakers. Tighten these back down in a clockwise fashion to complete this termination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never make speaker wire connections with the system turned on.
