How to Make Fleece Circle Blankets

How to Make Fleece Circle Blankets thumbnail
Fleece comes from sheep.

Fleece blankets are soft and warm enough to wrap a baby in, especially during the cold winter months. Parents searching for the perfect blanket to cover their child can create their own in a different shape, such as a circle. Circular fleece blankets are large enough to throw over a bed or keep handy in the car during a road trip.

  • Fleece fabric
  • Blanket binding
  • Polyester sewing thread
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase 21/2 yards of fleece fabric that is 60 inches wide from the fabric store. This will make a circular blanket with a 60-inch diameter. Also purchase 41/2 yards of 4-inch blanket binding, in a corresponding color, and matching polyester sewing thread.

    • 2

Lay the fleece out on a clean, flat surface. Measure 60 inches horizontally and vertically across the fabric with measuring tape, then mark the points with a fabric pencil. Repeat this step to measure 60 inches diagonally across, between the horizontal and vertical points, and mark as well. The result will be a total of 8 points.

    • 3

Cut the circular shape out of the fleece fabric with scissors, using the marked points as guides. Fold the blanket binding over the edges, with 2 inches of binding in the front and back of the blanket. Pin 1/4 inch above the edge of the blanket binding with long fabric pins.

    • 4

Insert the 11/80 point needle into the sewing machine's needle bar, and set the machine to a medium-size straight stitch. Slowly sew the blanket binding around the edge, 1/4 inch below the top of the binding. Avoid stretching the fleece while sewing, to prevent loose stitching.

    • 5

Snip the second end of the blanket binding once it meets the first end, leaving 2 inches to overlap. Tuck the binding in 1 inch, then continue sewing across the top of the binding to secure the ends. Remove the fabric pins once the blanket binding has been sewn.
