How to Use Dry Stevia as Sugar Substitute

Stevia is a plant whose extract can be used as a natural sweetener and can be substituted for sugar in many recipes. If you are trying to cut back on sugar intake or are cooking for diabetics or dieters, substituting dry, or powdered, stevia is one alternative to using cane sugar or other artificial sweeteners. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Convert the amount of sugar to the amount of stevia you will substitute in the recipe. Stevia is a more concentrated sweetener than sugar; therefore, you will need less stevia than you would sugar. A teaspoon of dried stevia is equivalent to a cup of sugar.

    • 2

Add the proper amount of stevia in your recipe instead of sugar. If you are baking, sift the dried stevia in with the rest of your dry ingredients, such as flour, baking powder and baking soda.

    • 3

Add bulk to your recipe. Because you are substituting a significant amount of one ingredient, sugar, you will need to add something for moisture or consistency. In baking, you can add applesauce for moisture; in cooking, you can use fruit juice or yogurt.

Cook or bake your recipe according to the instructions.
