How to Teach English Summer School
In order to teach English in summer school, you generally need to have the same credentials as a regular English instructor. Some school systems will allow you to teach a summer school class without having all the credentials and experience as an ordinary teacher; however, you will most likely need a four-year degree in English to qualify for the position. Many schools will also require you to have some teaching experience.

Determine the grade level at which you want to teach English summer school. For elementary and middle school English, you might be able to teach with an Associate's degree. For high school English, you will need a four-year degree.

Obtain a Bachelor's of Education degree or a Master's of Art in Teaching (MAT), depending on what level of English summer school you are looking to teach. Education programs will put you in the classroom and allow you to gain vital experience. You can find online programs if traditional on-campus programs are not right for you. Some accelerated programs can grant you an educational degree in two years.

Contact your local board of education to find out what job openings are available for English summer school classes or visit your local district's website to look for job openings. Make sure that you meet all of the qualifications in the job description, including degree and experience requirements.

Submit the application well in advance of the deadline; although most positions are not filled on a first-come first-served basis, sending your application in a week before the deadline will allow the material to reach the board of education with time to spare. A few days after submitting your application, contact the board of education to confirm that they received the application.

Wait to hear back about the position or positions you have applied for. If you decide to accept one offer, make sure you contact the other schools or programs to let them know immediately so they can fill the position with another candidate. You will be provided a curriculum and materials detailing what you will teach in the English summer school class you will be teaching.
