How to Glue a Car Door Jamb

Slamming your car door shut only to have part of the arm rest or interior padding fly off is a frustrating experience. When things fall off your car door, they may have been partially attached to your car door jamb, the area along the side edge. You can usually glue these plastic pieces back into place and return the car door to normal.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the door jamb and the part that needs to be glued with a solution of dish soap and water. Wipe the solution over the area with a soft cloth to avoid paint damage. The dish soap helps to remove any grease and dirt; these are often found along door edges and can prevent adequate glue bonding.

    • 2

Wipe away any excess moisture and soap residue from the door jamb and car part. Completely dry the area by running over it with a dry, soft cloth.

    • 3

Apply a thin layer of urethane glue to the piece you'll be attaching to the car door jamb. Nationally syndicated columnist Tim Carter of Ask the Builder recommends urethane glue for its waterproof properties and strength in addition to the fact that it bonds plastics and metals together well. Urethane glues may come in a tube that you squeeze or come with a brush for application.

    • 4

Press the object into place on the car door jamb and hold until it bonds to the metal. This should take only a few seconds.

    • 5

Keep the door open while the glue dries for the recommended amount of time on the packaging. Avoid handling the area during this time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Turn your interior light off while completing this project to avoid draining your car's battery.
