How to Grow Out a Relaxer That Is Two Weeks Old

How to Grow Out a Relaxer That Is Two Weeks Old thumbnail
Braids can protect the hair as it grows.

Chemical relaxers permanently alter the texture of hair. Unlike straightening with heat, the only way to regain your hair's original texture is to wait for it to grow out. A recent relaxer will have very little new growth to work with, so this will be the beginning of the journey back to your hair's natural texture. There are ways, however, to care for your hair that will minimize breakage and preserve the new growth. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Shampoo your hair no more than twice a week. Condition your hair after washing. If you use a rinse-out conditioner, use an oil-based moisturizer on your hair while still damp. Remove tangles from your hair gently.

    • 2

Use heat and other chemical hair processes sparingly; permanent dyes and bleach damage the hair and put new growth at risk.

    • 3

Style your hair using protective styles. Braids, twists and roller sets do not require heat or regular combing, which put stress on the hair.

    • 4

Do not pull the hair tightly or wear hats or headbands that "grab" the hair. Hats and headbands should have a satin lining to protect your hair. Sleep in a satin cap or use satin pillowcases.

    • 5

Have a stylist trim your hair monthly to get rid of the relaxed ends. Hair grows approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch per month, so you should see your natural hair texture in a few months.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your relaxer is less than one month old, ask a stylist about braiding. Braiding is not recommended after a very recent relaxer.

  • Talk to your stylist to get recommendations for gentle hair care products.

  • Tell your stylist that you are transitioning back to your natural hair texture. The stylist should be especially gentle with your hair, and keep an eye out for signs of damage.

  • Some products claim to "naturally relax" the hair. Not all of these products are safe. Read the list of ingredients and consult a stylist about their use.

  • A texturizer may be suggested. These are also permanent, and use the same chemicals as the relaxer. If you do not want to permanently change the texture of your hair, avoid body waves, curly perms, Jheri curls and texturizers.
