How to Make Lifting Weights From Concrete

How to Make Lifting Weights From Concrete thumbnail
Concrete can be used to make weights.

There are alternatives to the traditional weights and gyms preferred by many. One alternative way to exercise is by using concrete. There are a few different ways to use concrete weights, some of which involve pouring the raw mixture into a mold and others simply use the blocks and attachments. Using cement as a weight has the same benefits as other alternative methods of training--such as sandbags--in that they are difficult to handle, which adds to the exercise. Some of these contraptions can be used to perform standard exercises while others require a unique lifting form.

Instructions

  1. Concrete Variation of the Lat Pull Down

    • 1

Find a low hanging ceiling with a visible support beam and drill or screw the pulley into place.

    • 2

Thread the rope through the pulley. Make sure that the rope follows through easily and doesn't stick or fall off.

    • 3

Place one mesh bag inside of the other to reinforce them. If you were unable to find strong mesh bags, you may want to consider more than two.

    • 4

Place some concrete blocks in the mesh bags and knot the bag. One knot should be sufficient.

    • 5

Tie the rope securely around the knot in the bags. As you did with tying the knot in the bag, make sure the rope is not tied too tight as to be difficult to remove from the bags.

    • 6

Hold the end of the rope opposite the mesh bags in either a seated or standing position. Pull the rope down and lift the mesh bags off the floor and toward the ceiling.

    Making Concrete Dumbbells

    • 7

Cut a rope into two 18-inch sections. The 18 inches can be modified depending on how big the concrete blocks you have are. There should be enough room to get your hands comfortable between the rope and the block.

    • 8

Loop the rope through the hole in the concrete blocks and a tie a secure knot.

    • 9

Use the masking tape and cover the concrete block with it. This will protect your hands and other body parts from getting scratched or cut while you are lifting them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Even though these weights are non traditional, the one item that should always remain in place is a spotter, especially when you are maxing out.
