How to Wash a Papasan Chair Cushion

A papasan cushion is placed over the reeds in a papasan chair, providing you a comfortable place to sit. Over time, dirt, dust, hair and pollen can build up on the papasan cushion, making it look dirty. Routine cleaning should be done monthly to remove all of the buildup, as well as any spots or stains that have developed. Every year, the cushion should be deep cleaned. Deep cleaning removes any of the residue and dirt that routine cleaning does not remove. Properly cleaning and caring for the cushion helps maintain its lifespan. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Routine and Spot Cleaning

    • 1

Attach the fabric or upholstery attachment to the hose of your vacuum cleaner. Run the vacuum hose and attachment over the papasan cushion to remove dirt and dust.

    • 2

Combine 1 tsp. of a mild liquid dish detergent with 2 cups of warm water.

    • 3

Dip a sponge or soft-bristled cleaning brush into the soapy water. Scrub into any stains.

    • 4

Dampen a soft cloth in cool water. Wring excess water from the cloth. Dab at the spot to remove soap residue. Repeat the process until the stain is removed.

    • 5

Allow the cushion to air dry. Flip the cushion every two to three months.

    Deep Cleaning

    • 6

Fill the water tank on a upholstery steam cleaner, or a steam cleaner with a hose and upholstery attachment. Add a steam cleaning upholstery or carpet cleaning soap. Typically, 1 capful of cleaner is added per gallon of water, but be sure to read the manufacturer's directions and add soap as directed.

    • 7

Turn the steam cleaner on. Run the hose and upholstery attachment over the papasan cushion for cleaning. Flip the cushion over and repeat the process on the opposite side.

    • 8

Rinse the soapy water from the steam cleaner's upholstery tank. Fill the tank with tap water. Run the steam cleaner over the papasan cushion to remove soap residue. Although it is not a requirement that you remove the soap residue, soap can attract and trap dust and dirt, causing your chair to become dirty quicker.

    • 9

Allow the papasan cushion to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never use chlorine or bleach-based products to clean papasan cushions. They can discolor the fabric.
