  1. Drying Whole Walnuts With Shells

      Preheat your oven to 250 F.

      Spread the whole walnuts across a shallow pan in a single layer. Do not remove the shells. Roast the walnuts in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes.

      Remove the walnuts and let them sit until cool enough to handle. Split the shells with a narrow nonserrated knife along the seam if desired.

    Roasting Shelled Whole Walnuts

      Preheat your oven to 275 F.

      Shell the walnuts and spread them across a shallow pan in a single layer. Purchase preshelled whole walnuts if you prefer.

      Roast the walnuts in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove the pan and allow the walnuts to cool before eating or storing them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when splitting open the shells with a knife. Do not cut toward yourself and use a sharp knife.
