How to Do Wood Decorative Projects
You can take several approaches when doing wood projects, and a use number of ways to decorate wood. You will need to purchase any needed supplies that you don't already have, like wood burning equipment, stencils, colored pencils and/or paint. Use your imagination to develop a project and complimentary design that suits your needs.

Decide on the type of wood project you want to do. Take into consideration any skills you currently have that would be a good match for a particular type of wood project, for example, a project that involves adding decorative flowers to a table or bookcase. Or you may want to create a plaque with a message on it using wood burning equipment. You can also use wood carving tools to create a decorative design on furniture, a wood plaque, gift box, wood door frame or base boards.

Purchase or assemble needed supplies to complete your project. Keep in mind that if you intend to do a project that involves wood burning or carving wood to use proper precautions and to supervise children using wood burning or carving tools.

Draw the design you want to create on the surface of the wood. If you are using stencils, use them to trace designs onto your wood surface. This is a good step regardless the the type of wood project you are doing, but is especially a good idea when choosing a project where the results will be irreversible such as burning or carving designs into wood.

Use the tools to create your design idea. For example, if you are doing a wood burned design, start with the outer edge of the design, defining the border for the design. Then start adding the inner details. Remember it is better to remove less wood from the surface than too much, since you can always take off more but you can't put any back.
