As a consultant, putting your best foot forward to attract and retain quality, paying clients to your company is very important. Having a strong business plan that includes how you'll provide your services helps you make that impression. There are various resources for you through which you can gain templates and samples for consultancy services. How you access these templates are a matter of personal preference and access.

1. Visit websites that offer business plan templates and conduct a search for the term "consulting" (see Resources). Download the templates from your chosen sites and use your word processing software to edit according to your needs.

2. Visit the reference section at your local library to find business plan books --- Gale's "The Business Plans Handbook" is one example. Visit the library's website to see if you can access this information online. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh has an extensive sample of business plan books (see Resources). Copy or download business plan samples that fit your needs and transfer the outline to your preferred word processing software to create a template.

3. Meet with local business counselors to discuss your business plan. They may have business plan samples that can act as a template to base your business plan on. Reputable, free counseling can be received from the Small Business Development Center, SCORE or Women's Business Center office near you.

• Access your local university's or alma mater's library for a more extensive selection of business research material.

• Don't plagiarize another business plan. You want to maintain the integrity of your company and yourself, especially if you plan to share the plan with bankers, investors and other potential partners.
