A Homemade Remedy for Preventing Dogs From Licking Hot Spots

Hot spots are a common malady for dogs. Essentially, a hot spot occurs when an area of the skin becomes overly sensitive, causing the dog to lick or chew the area. These hot spots can eventually develop into sores and infections, which can then be spread to other parts of a dog's body. You can clear up your dog's hot spots with a homemade remedy.

Things You'll Need

• Black tea bags
• Scissors or trimmer

Instructions

1. Trim the dog's hair in the area of the hot spot, using a small pair of scissors or a beard trimmer. This allows you to view the problem and helps prevent further infection.

2. Clean the area with soap and water. Use a gentle body wash or hand soap.

3. Place a black tea bag in a glass of warm water. Once the tea has soaked up some moisture, remove it from the glass.

4. Press the warm tea bag on the hot spot, and hold it for a few minutes. Black tea helps the hot spot heal by drying it out.

5. Monitor your dog for signs of chewing or licking. Use a tea compress two or three times a day until the the hot spot clears up.

Tips & Warnings

• If the dog continues to lick the hot spot, consider placing an e-collar on the dog until the hot spot has healed.
