How to Get a Copy of My 2006 W-2 Form
A W-2 form is a form that employers must send to employees detailing the wages that they've earned and taxes that were withheld throughout the year. The government requires that a W-2 must be mailed out before Jan. 31 each year. You may need a copy of an older W-2 for tax or record purposes, which you can obtain in several ways.

Contact your employer. Employers are required to keep records for two to three years for tax purposes. You can either send a request through the post office or go to the human resources office directly, if possible, for a faster response.

File form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, with the IRS if you cannot get the W-2 from your employer for any reason. Check box No. 8 for the W-2. You can get a transcript for free. You can print the form from the IRS website.
Alternatively, you can call 1-800-829-1040 to verbally request a transcript, which includes your W-2, instead of filing a form. The information is available for the past 10 years, so you should be able to get a copy of your 2006 W-2 until 2016.

File form 4506 if you want a copy, instead of a transcript, of your 2006 tax return. The copy contains all forms sent with the return, including the W-2 or W-2s for the year. Getting an exact copy costs $57, so if you only need the W-2 copy you will want to file 4506-T instead.
