How to Remove a 1987 Ranger Ignition Switch

The ignition switch on a 1987 Ford Ranger triggers the starting process for the Ranger's engine. This switch has electrical contacts inside of it, and with every turn of the key, those contacts wear down. If the contacts wear down completely, then the ignition switch won't function and the Ranger won't be able to start. If this happens to you, then you need to remove the switch so that you can replace it with a new one.

Instructions

Put the key in the ignition, and make sure it is in the "Lock" position. Remove the screws on the bottom of the steering column trim panels with a Phillips screwdriver if you have a non-tilt steering column. If you have a tilt steering column, squeeze the upper extension shroud off of the steering column at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions with your hands and take off the covers.

Unplug the wiring to the ignition switch by hand. Drill off the heads to the bolts holding the switch to the lock cylinder with the drill and the one-eighth-inch metal drill bit.

    • 3

Remove the base of the screws holding the ignition switch in place using the screw extractor and the drill. Pull the ignition switch away from the actuator pin in the column, and take it away from the Ranger.
