How to Make a Katamari Damacy Costume
Fox News describes Keita Takahashi's Katamari Damacy as a combination of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Super Mario Brothers." This surreal game follows the Prince, a cylindrical-headed character whose father has destroyed the universe during a particularly nasty bender. The Prince must rebuild the stars by "rolling up" objects with a sticky -- and ever-growing -- katamari ball. With basic crafting skills, a little imagination and this tutorial, you can make a hat that makes you look just like The Prince for Halloween or your next convention or theme party.

- Blank white or green baseball cap
- Cloth scissors
- Large foam cylinder
- Serrated bread knife
- Industrial strength cloth tape
- Tarp
- Matte green spray paint
- Blow dryer
- Small foam cone
- Craft knife
- Small red rubber ball
- Rubber ball
- Instant glue
- Self-adhesive Velcro squares
- Pale green t-shirt
- Purple tights
- Slippers

Buy a large foam cylinder and a small foam cone from a craft store. Cut the cylinder in half with a serrated bread knife to create two smaller cylinders.

Remove the beak from a blank white or green baseball cap by cutting through the seam with cloth scissors. Snip off any hanging threads and discard the beak.

Ask a friend to sit down and put this beak-less hat on his head. Put one foam cylinder on each side of the hat with the cut side facing inward toward his ears. Have him hold up the cylinders by pressing them inward toward his head with the palms of his hands. If necessary, make adjustments to align the tops of the cylinders with the top of the hat. Have your friend remain motionless and hold the cylinders firmly in place.

Tape all the way across the tops of both cylinders and the hat with a long piece of industrial strength cloth tape. Add overlapping layers of tape for strength. Once you have covered the top of the hat with tape, begin taping across the back of the head using the same method. Continue layering pieces of tape to bind the cylinders to the hat on all sides, but leave your friend's face uncovered.

Remove the hat from your friend's head and flip it over. Secure the bottom of the cylinders to the hat with smaller strips of cloth tape that fold up inside of the hat.

Lay down a tarp in a well ventilated area. Place your hat in the middle of the tarp and cover it with matte green spray paint on all sides. Dry it with a blow dryer, then add another coat of spray paint to ensure full coverage.

Cut off the tip of the small foam cone with a craft knife to make a tiny circular plateau. Use the craft knife to dig a hole large enough for a small rubber ball. Fill the hole with instant glue and place the ball on top. Hold it in place for at least 30 seconds.

Attach the bottom of the cone to the top of the cylindrical hat with a large, self-adhesive Velcro square. Finish off your costume by complementing the Prince hat with an extra-large pale green shirt, purple tights and black or green slippers.
