How to Make Paper Mache Flip Flops
Literally translated from French, paper mache means "chewed paper." According to The Grove Encyclopedia of Materials and Techniques in Arts, the craft originated in East Asian ceremonies around 200 A.D. and enjoyed popularity in Europe during the 18th century. Today, paper mache is a creative activity that both school age students and adults enjoy. Making your own pair of paper mache flip flops is an interesting, rainy-day project that you can complete in just a few hours.

1
Trace the bottom, side and top components of one of your flip flops on a piece of cardboard. Cut out the pieces and tape or staple them around your flip flop to protect it from the papier mache. Cover your flip flop with clear plastic wrap to further protect it.

2
Mix the flour and cold water in a mixing bowl. Allow this mixture to come to a boil. Remove from heat and add sugar. The mixture will thicken as it cools.

3
Tear strips of newspaper and dip the paper into the paste, making sure it is completely coated. Run each strip between your fingers as you lift it to remove excess paste.
-
4
Drape the strip of newspaper over your plastic-wrapped flip flop. Repeat the process, and overlap the strips. Allow each layer to completely dry for several hours before adding more layers.
-
5
Repeat the steps to make the second flip flop in your pair. After your flip flops are fully dried, you can paint your flip flops and decorate them as you wish.
-
6
Tear or cut off the papier mache when you want to restore your flip flops to their original state.

Tips & Warnings
Cover your work area with newspaper to avoid messes.
Wheatpaste-based papier mache mix can mold over time. If you intend to keep your creation for more than a few weeks, use powdered wall paper non-porous adhesive instead of flour.
