How to Paint Plank Flooring

How to Paint Plank Flooring thumbnail
Painting a plank floor can mask the fact that it is wood.

A plank floor is a composed of parallel wood planks, similar to a traditional hardwood floor, except the planks are much wider than those used in traditional hardwood flooring, with the planks measuring between 3 and 8 inches in width. The wide planks tend to evoke a more rustic or antique look more than other types of wood flooring. Plank flooring, as with any wood floor, can be a good surface for paint, but only if you prepare the surface correctly.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill in any gaps or cracks in the planks with wood filler. Level out the filler once it is placed in the gap, and then let it dry. Sand the filler area smooth once it is dry.

    • 2

Sand the entire surface of the floor with 150-grit sandpaper. This will be easier if you use a sanding block instead of just the paper, but it can be done either way.

    • 3

Clean the floor with strong detergent and a rag. Rinse thoroughly and once the floor dries, go over it with a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust or debris.

    • 4

Open the can of primer sealer, which may be labeled as a sealing primer, mix it up and pour it into a paint tray.

    • 5

Apply the primer with a paintbrush 2 to 3 inches in from the walls, all the way around the room. After that, dip a roller into the tray and apply the primer to the floor. Work from one side of the room to the other so you don't paint yourself into a corner, and roll the primer on with the grain of the planks. Wait for the primer to dry, according to the instructions on the can.

    • 6

Open and mix the paint. Pour it into the tray and apply it to the floor in the same manner that you applied the primer. Let the paint dry and then apply at least one additional coat. Let the paint completely dry for two or three days.

    • 7

Apply three coats of polyurethane finish in the same manner as described in Step 5. Let each coat dry before you apply the next one.
