Decide what type of pet you're interested in. Would you prefer a dog, a cat, a hamster or another kind of domesticated animal? Or would you prefer a more exotic pet, such as a parrot or a reptile?
-
2
Look online for local rescue organizations; most rescue groups list available animals on their websites. And some pet supply stores such as Petsmart and Petco work with local rescue groups and feature adoptable cats and dogs in their stores.
If you're looking for a specific breed of cat or dog, look for a breed-specific rescue. And rescues aren't just for dogs and cats; there are rescue organizations for horses, parrots, reptiles and rabbits, too.

Tips & Warnings
Before you look for a new pet, do some research. Make sure you're going to be able to address all of its needs. You'll be able to find books on pets in libraries and pet supply stores. And there's always a wealth of information online, but be sure to rely on reputable sources.
Before you bring home your new pet, prepare your home and purchase any necessary supplies. For example, if your new pet is going to be loose in your home, conceal electrical wires as well as possible and put away anything that your new pet could get hurt on. Also decide where you're going to keep its cage or food and water dishes.
