The router will have different ports for your modem than it does for your PCs.

The best way to distribute speed equally between two PCs is using a router. A router works a little like a traffic cop at a stop light, making sure that every driver moves through the light efficiently and quickly. It also makes sure that Internet speeds are distributed equally amongst the computer using the router. If you hook up a router between your Internet modem and your computers, then you will have equal speed in both computers when surfing the Internet.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the router to both of your PCs using Ethernet cables. Plug the Ethernet cables that come from your computers into the ports labeled with numbers on the back of your router.

    • 2

Plug the router to your Internet modem using an Ethernet cable. The port on the back of the router that connects to the modem is labeled different and often color coded differently on your router from all the other ports.

    • 3

Plug the modem to the cable or land line that you will be using to connect to the Internet and power on both the modem and the router. When both computers log onto the Internet through a Web browser, the router will split the Internet connection speed evenly.
