Blond highlights add sun-kissed color to hair.

Highlights can add dimension and interest to your hair. Whether you prefer subtle, natural-looking color or bold, attention-getting streaks, highlights add to your look and enhance your hairstyle. Doing highlights at home is made easier using a frosting cap. These specially designed plastic caps have holes for you to select and pull sections of hair through for dying. This keeps the highlights evenly spaced and uniform. It works best with hair that is short to medium length as long hair can get tangled under the cap. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your hair to remove any knots. If your hair is very thick or prone to tangling, spritz it with leave-in conditioner and brush through.

    • 2

Pull the cap onto your head and adjust so that it is aligned properly with your forehead and the nape of your neck. It should lay snugly against your head.

    • 3

Examine the hole pattern on the cap and determine the highlighting design you'd like in your hair. Many caps will have options for thicker streaks using larger holes or subtle highlights using smaller holes. Decide the design you'd like before beginning.

    • 4

Grasp the hooking tool in your dominant hand. Start at the front of your head and push the hook through the first hole. When you reach the scalp, hook a small section of hair by scooping the hook toward you.

    • 5

Pull the tool, with the hair hooked, back out through the hole. Finger-comb through the section to smooth it down and ensure the hair is exposed from root to tip. The hole should form a tight "collar" around the base of the hair.

    • 6

Continue hooking and pulling out sections of hair until you are satisfied with the number of sections exposed. You can highlight as many or as few sections of hair as you'd like.

    • 7

Mix the hair dye according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 8

Brush the dye onto the exposed pieces of hair, section by section. Start by painting the root then gradually bring the dye down to the tips, coating both surfaces.

    • 9

Allow the dye to process for the designated time then rinse the dye from your head, keeping the cap on. Once you've rinsed all of the dye, remove the cap and condition your hair.

    • 10

Dry and style your hair as desired.
