How to Make Friends in Pakistan

How to Make Friends in Pakistan thumbnail
You don't have to travel to Pakistan to make a friend there.

Pakistan is the sixth most populous nation in the world, with 184.4 million people as of 2010. The South Asian nation received its independence from British India in 1947. Short of making a trip to Pakistan, you can easily make friends who live in the country via the Internet. Or, familiarize yourself with the Pakistani community in your local area and start making connections. The friendlier and more open you are, the easier it will be.

Meet Pakistani immigrants and Pakistani-Americans in the area where you live. Get to know people locally first, and they can then introduce you to their friends, family and other contacts in Pakistan. Visit a local Islamic center frequented by Pakistanis, eat at South Asian restaurants and shop in Muslim halal grocery stores or markets. If you are a student, you can also join a Pakistani student association. Be friendly and introduce yourself.

Take Urdu lessons online through Skype. Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language and the national language of Pakistan. Sign up as a Skype user and then visit the Skype Community website. Click the "Search" link in the right column, enter "Urdu" in the "Find Words" field and click the "Search Titles Only" box. Hit the "Perform the Search" button to find people who can teach you Urdu online. Contact a Skype user offering lessons. Learning Urdu will help you communicate with Pakistanis, but you can also try to connect with other people from the country through your tutor.

Visit Meetup.com, a website that helps groups of people with shared interests plan meetings and form offline clubs. Enter "Pakistan" or "South Asian," for example, and your city or ZIP code into the search fields to see if there are any groups near you which you can join. Read about Pakistani culture and history before attending, in order to better informed and show your interest and respect.
