DIY: Studded Tires

DIY: Studded Tires thumbnail
Stud your own tires for winter conditions.

When winter changeover season arrives, it is time to go to the tire store and purchase your studded tires. Today you can often find the best prices for studded tires on the Internet. Sometimes, however, you might find a better deal on a studdable tire than on tires that already have the studs installed. Studdable tires are tires that have holes in them, allowing you to install your own studs after purchase. Studded tires are used for driving on icy or snow-covered roads. You can save money by installing your own studs if you have access to a few important tools from any auto parts store.

Instructions

    • 1

      Put on your eye protection.

    • 2

Sit in your chair and roll the tire between your knees. Hold the tire in position with your knees. Install a drop of oil into each stud hole as you move around the tire. The oil will help the stud gun do its job more efficiently.

    • 3

Load your studs into the stud gun by letting them slide into the filler tube. Make sure that the flat side of the studs point down towards the tire.

    • 4

Position the stud gun tip into a hole and squeeze the trigger. Continue this process all the way around the tire until all of the stud holes are filled.
