How to Paint a Gold Line Around a Dinner Plate
Painting a gold line around your dinner plates makes normal plates more glamorous and elegant, and is a much cheaper alternative to buying a set of new plates. Since a gold line is such a simple design, you do not have to be an artist or particularly creative to complete this project. Even if you do not have a steady hand, minor waves and imperfections in the gold paint may make the plates even more unique and special.
Things You'll Need
- Ceramic dinner plates
- Gold porcelain ceramic paint (brush-on or paint pen)
- Thin paint brush
- Cloth or cotton swab

1
Plan where to draw the gold line around your dinner plates. Decide whether the line will follow the outer or inner rim of the plate. If you are unsure, sketch a picture of the plate on a sheet of paper and paint the gold line in different ways onto the sketch. This can help you decide exactly where you want to position the gold line.

2
Dip the paint brush into the gold porcelain ceramic paint or use a gold porcelain paint pen. Wipe the brush lightly on the side of the paint container to get rid of excess paint.

3
Paint the gold line around the dinner plate. Use a steady hand to avoid any drastic imperfections. Remember that slight wavering in the line can add character and uniqueness to each plate and is not necessarily something to worry about.
-
4
Wipe away any problem areas along the edges of the gold line using the corner of a clean cloth or a cotton swab.
-
5
Allow the paint to dry for a few hours, and then bake the plates in the oven at 300 degrees F for 35 minutes to set the paint.

Tips & Warnings
Double-check the label of the porcelain paints to make sure they are not toxic, and are dishwasher safe prior to painting.
