How to Derestrict a Schwinn Sport

Make a Schwinn Sport faster by derestricting it.

As with the company's bicycles, Schwinn Sport scooters are high-performing and well-manufactured, compared with other four-stroke, 50cc scooters. Unfortunately, as with the other scooters, Schwinn Sport's are plagued by an occasionally frustrating top speed. You can compensate for your Schwinn Sport's low top speed by derestricting the scooter. Derestricting a Schwinn Sport involves taking a restricting washer out of the scooter's drive belt box.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the box that houses the Schwinn Sport's drive belt. The box is located on the left side of the scooter, directly below the seat and just in front of the rear wheel. It is identifiable by the fact that the Schwinn Sport's kick start peg is connected to it.

    • 2

Take the peg of the kick start off of the box housing the drive belt. You will need to loosen the bolt head at the top of the peg to withdraw the pin and take the peg off the drive belt box.

    • 3

Work around the outside of the drive belt box, unscrewing and removing the bolts holding the plate of the box on. The bolts will unscrew with a socket wrench.

    • 4

Pop the faceplate of the box off. Take care to catch the loose mechanical components that will fall when the faceplate is popped off. These parts include a spacing washer and the mechanical piece that allows the kick start to crank the starter.

    • 5

Block the turning of the front wheel of the drive belt system with a strap wrench. Loop the strap end around the wheel, tighten it and wedge the handle.

    • 6

Crack the bolt holding the blocked wheel in place. Use a socket wrench. Unscrew the bolt completely by hand.

    • 7

Pull the bolt from the center of the blocked wheel and remove the wheel from the drive belt case.

    • 8

Use a telescopic magnet to extract the small restricting washer around the rod to which the blocked wheel was attached.

Tips & Warnings

  • Derestricting a Schwinn Sport scooter is illegal in some states without also reregistering the scooter as a larger class motorcycle.
