How to Construct an Anti-Static Grounding Wristband
An anit-static grounding wrist strap is used whenever you perform work on electronics, such as the internal workings of a computer. The strap grounds you and prevents any static shock that could damage sensitive electronics components. If you don't want to purchase a grounding strap, you can make one out of basic components that can be found at your local electronics store.
Things You'll Need
- Copper wire
- 1 megohm resistor
- Electrical tape
- Ground wire
- Alligator clips

Wrap a length of copper wire around your wrist. Make sure there is a couple inches of wire leftover.

Wrap the hanging end of the copper wire to one end of the 1 megohm resistor. This is the component that will ground you. Secure the wire to the resistor with electrical tape.

Wrap one end of a length of ground wire to the remaining end of the resistor and secure it with electrical tape. Make sure the length of ground wire is long enough to comfortable reach your computer from where you plan to rest your arm.

Connect the remaining end of the wire to an alligator clip and secure it with tape.

Attach the alligator clip to a portion of your laptop and leave it there while you work on the device.
