How to Make a Strapless Top from a Man's Shirt

Making a strapless top from a man's shirt is a do-it-yourself project that is a good way to make a fun, feminine top. The first time you try this project, you may want to use an old unloved T-shirt. It may take a couple of tries to get the strapless top looking just right. This pattern works best if the shirt is a little form-fitting; you don't want to start with too loose of a shirt because it will sag, but you don't want a shirt that is really tight because you want extra material to work with. Instructions

    • 1

Put on the T-shirt. Decide where you would like the neckline to be and mark it with the chalk or soap. If there is a logo or image on the shirt keep in mind that it will be higher once the shirt has been made strapless.

    • 2

Lay the shirt on a flat surface with the front side facing up. Using the scissors, cut off the sleeves in a diagonal line from the underarm of the shirt to the neck.

    • 3

Flip the shirt over and cut the back side starting at the bottom of the left arm hole straight across to the right.

    • 4

Place the shirt front side up and cut out the neck in an even oval using the lines that you marked earlier as a guide for the lowest point.

    • 5

Using the remaining shirt, usually from the bottom seam but you can also use the fabric from the back of the shirt that you cut off, cut out a long strip that you will use for a drawstring.

    • 6

Fold over the shirt 1 inch and sew 1/4-inch from the edge. This creates a casing for your strap.

    • 7

Thread the drawstring through the new collar. Put the new shirt on and adjust the collar. Tie the drawstring around your back (for sleeveless) or around your neck (for a halter top).

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use ribbon or other multicolored shoelace for the drawstring. Braid materials together for a fun, funky look.

  • Save the material that you cut to make patches.
