How to Install Kraft Paper Insulation

Fiberglass insulation serves to maintain temperatures and keep out moisture in the home, and you may even be able to see some exposed insulation in your garage, attic or basement. Many types of insulation are covered on one side with kraft paper. The paper gives you a surface through which you can staple the insulation into place, since the loose insulation itself does not hold the staples. Take care to position the paper insulation properly to ensure the best placement and seal for your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Don protective construction gloves, a dust mask and protective goggles when working with insulation. Insulation is made of tiny fiberglass shards, which can cause serious irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat if you don't take proper precautions.

    • 2

Cut the insulation to fit in your installation area. The size and length of the insulation you need will vary by project, depending on the space between the joints in your wall or ceiling. Lay the insulation paper side down on a flat surface and cut through the insulation and the paper with a sharp utility knife.

    • 3

Set the insulation in place, with the edges up against the wood joists, studs or posts in your wall or ceiling. Tuck the edges of the kraft paper against the inside surface of the wood.

    • 4

Staple the paper in place against the inside of the wood with a staple gun. Once you place the first staple, gently stretch the kraft paper towards your next staple point to create a smoother surface; otherwise the paper will bunch up while you work.

    • 5

Install a staple every 12 to 18 inches along the joist or stud, stretching the paper each time to prevent bunching. Make sure you staple to the inside of the joist and carefully line up the paper each time. Continue until the installation is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are installing insulation on a ceiling, consider renting or buying an electric staple gun. This gun does not require you to apply pressure of your own to shoot a staple, and so will limit the amount of leaning or moving you have to do while on a ladder.

  • Never handle insulation without the required protective gear.
